Scenic Gresham rests on the southern side of the Columbia river, just east of Portland. the 4th largest city in Oregon, and it is growing quickly. However, it’s not just the economy that’s growing. Gresham’s drug problem is growing too. Luckily, Gresham drug treatment centers are ready and available to help.
Addiction Struggles in Gresham
A sinister problem is developing in Gresham. A report on Oregon from the NIH (National Institute on Drug Abuse) indicates a sharp increase in the levels of meth use and trafficking, particularly with young adults. The general consensus among authorities in Oregon indicates that Meth was the single largest problem. A 2015 report showed meth-related arrests showed that from 2014 – 2015, deaths increased more than 15%. Further, the number of meth-related arrests.in Oregon has doubled from 2009 to 2015.
In general rug death rate has more than doubled since 1999. Meth is the largest contributor, but heroin also plays a large part. When people turn to heroin these days, it most often the result of a preexisting addiction to painkillers. When the supply of prescription gets cut off, or becomes prohibitively expensive, addicts often turn to heroin to supply their needs.
National statistics reveal a startling truth. Roughly a quarter of convicted property and drug offenders committed their crimes in order to get money for drugs. If the health risks are not enough of a reason to handle a drug addiction, then perhaps the increased risk of turning to crime to feed an addiction will act as a motivator.
On a brighter note, usage rates of prescription opiate have leveled off. This is welcome news, since more people still die from prescription drug abuse than from meth, cocaine, and heroin combined. Although since the majority of new users turn to heroin after prescription opiates become unavailable, we can look forward heroin usage rates decreasing as well.
To mitigate the issue, the government is spending millions of dollars on helping addicts in Washington. The Attorney General’s office has allocated grants in excess of $2.7 million to promote drug abuse prevention and safe usage of prescription drugs.
There have been some breakthroughs on the national level as well. Last year, Congress passed the 21st Century Cures Act and the CARA (Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act), which allocated more than $1 Billion in an effort to aid treatment efforts all around the country.
