Pueblo is the county seat of Pueblo County in the State of Colorado. It is the ninth most populous city in Colorado. The city’s location is at the confluence of the Arkansas River and Fountain Creek and has a semi-arid desert land. You may hear many people calling Pueblo as the Steel City. That is because it is one of the largest steel-producing cities in the US. However, Pueblo has few problems to face and substance abuse is not an exception. In order to address this issue there have been established Pueblo drug treatment facilities and rehab centers that aim to provide help for addicts.
According to the County’s report, in 2014 around 15.6% of adults from Pueblo were binge drinkers. However, this drinking rate is lower than the average state rate (18.4%). At the same time, younger people are much more likely to drink alcohol in Pueblo than adults. Around 27.1% of Pueblo youth are binge drinking, which is much more than the state average (16.6%).
Drug use is quite popular in Pueblo as well. In 2014, here were about 18% of heroin admissions. According to the officials the heroin use in Pueblo is so high due to various reasons. Among the factors that facilitate the heroin abuse in the region are easy transportation, access to illegal narcotics and the economic level. Rural southern Colorado counties have the lowest socioeconomic levels in the state.
A high rate of drug abuse implies a high rate of drug overdoses as well. Pueblo is one of the cities with the highest drug-related deaths in Colorado and in the US. The CDC data show that the drug involved deaths got triple in the Pueblo County in the period between 1999 and 2015.
Fortunately, the Counties’ officials are working in order to address the substance abuse problem in the region. They elaborated an Improvement Plan. It contains strategies, organize activities and provide services in order to prevent, reduce and treat the substance abuse.
Also, there are measures taken at the national level as well. Last year, Congress passed the 21st Century Cures Act and the CARA (Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act). This means that the US Government allocated more than $1 Billion for addiction recovery all over the country.
